Getting started
What happens on the Discovery call?
A 60-minute conversation about your current contract, your renewal timeline, and whether the numbers suggest a gap worth investigating. There’s no cost and no obligation — if the math doesn’t support moving forward, we’ll tell you that directly.
How is this different from asking my current operator for a review?
Your operator wrote the contract you’re trying to evaluate — they aren’t the ones positioned to tell you where it underperforms. NxtChapter is fee-only and institution-side only: no commissions, no referral relationships with bookstore operators, no incentive to find, or not find, a particular answer.
Methodology & fees
How much does an engagement cost?
Every tier is a flat fee, quoted upfront before we see your contract — never a percentage of recovered revenue, and never contingent on what we find. You’ll know the exact cost before you commit to anything. See Engagement Tiers & Fees.
What if the analysis doesn’t find a meaningful gap?
Then that’s the finding, delivered in writing. Tier 1 is a fixed-cost diagnostic specifically so a clean bill of health costs you the same as an actionable one — we have no incentive to manufacture a problem.
Where do your benchmarks come from?

Engagement logistics
How long does an engagement take?
Tier 1 (Discover) typically runs a few weeks from kickoff to findings brief. Later tiers depend on your renewal calendar and procurement process — we’ll give you a specific timeline once we know your situation.
Does this disrupt our current bookstore operations?
No. The analysis works from your existing contract and financial data; there’s no need to involve your current operator or change anything operationally during the diagnostic phase.
Who at our institution should be involved?
Usually finance and business office leadership at minimum. Depending on findings, the Provost’s office, General Counsel, and Auxiliary Services often join later conversations — see Who We Serve for why each seat matters.
Funding
Can this be grant-funded?
Often, yes — particularly for HBCUs and Title III-eligible institutions. The Funding section covers UNCF and intermediary channels, state-level HBCU programs, and how to write the engagement into an existing capacity-building grant.
Trust & independence
Do you have relationships with bookstore operators?
No. NxtChapter takes no commissions, referral fees, or compensation of any kind from Follett, Barnes & Noble College, or any other operator. Full detail is in the Independence Statement.
